On December 26, 2004, a gigantic, 10-meter-high wave – tsunami rose after a dreadful earthquake near the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The wave struck the shores of Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri-Lanka, India, Thailand, the Maldives, Burma, Bangladesh, the Seychelles, Kenya and Somalia.
The highest toll of tsunami victims was registered in Indonesia – in the Banda Acheh province over 156,000 people were reported killed or missing. In Sri-Lanka the disaster took the lives of over 35,000 people, in India over 16,000, and in Thailand over 9,000.
Remembrance rites in memory of the tsunami victims are being performed these days across all Asia.
