"Galileo" Sending Signals

Head of the European Space Agency (ESA) mission in Moscow Alain-Fournier Sicre says signals have been received from the first European navigation spacecraft "Galileo" launched using a Russian carrier rocket on December 28.

"We have all got good news. "Galileo' has been placed on a preset orbit", said Sicre on the phone from the Baikonur space center. According to him, control of the satellite will shortly be handed over to the Customer.

The "Galileo" satellite is the first spacecraft of the future European navigation space system. The second "Galileo" satellite is scheduled to be launched also by a Russian carrier rocket from Baikonur in spring 2006.
