Turkey's Neighbors Hiding Bird Flu

Turkey has accused its neighbors of concealing information about bird flu.

Turkish Agriculture Minister Mehdi Eker has not named any specific country, having limited himself to a generic term of "closed regimes", but said that Turkey's battle against bird flu was being hampered by the refusal of neighboring countries to admit they are harboring the deadly H5N1 virus on their own territory.

Tens of thousands of poultry have been culled in Iran and Syria in regions bordering on Turkey. However, these countries deny that the H5N1 virus is present on their soil. This weekend American virologists working in Turkey on bird flu are leaving for Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Iran to study the epidemiological situation on the spot.
