US University Claims Discovery of Vaccine against Bird Flu

A spokesman for Pittsburg University in the United States has announced that a vaccine that provides 100-percent protection against bird flu virus H5N1 has been created in university laboratories.

The vaccine was made using gene engineering methods. It will shortly be tested for its ability to protect humans. In recent years epidemics of bird flu in poultry have been registered in Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, S. Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Turkey and Romania.

Over the past 8 years bird flu killed from 150 to 200 million of poultry – human civilization has never before faced an epidemic of poultry of such proportions. In 1997 the first case of human infection with virus H5N1 was registered in Hong Kong. Since then 138 cases of human infection have been reported. In 71 cases the infected person died, according to World Health Organization statistics.
