Afghanistan: Police Shoot into Crowd of Protesters

In the southern Afghanistan town of Qalat police shot into a crowd of protesters who tried to march on a US military base. Four people were killed and about twenty, including seven policemen, wounded in the incident.

About 500 people have been protesting against the publication of the Prophet Muhammad cartoons in the European press. Law enforcement personnel guarding the base had to open fire at the crowd who were pelting them with stones.

During the four days of unrest in Afghanistan caused by the publication of the Prophet Muhammad cartoons 10 people have been killed and several dozen wounded.
