Top-Level Pricing Commission in Place of Gas Cartel

Alexei Miller, head of the Russian gas monopoly RAO Gazprom, said the creation of the coordination group on gas pricing was a completely new format of what he called the “energy dialog” as well as another step in improving international cooperation in the sphere.

Miller who was on the Russian delegation to the Gas Exporting Countries Forum in Doha, Qatar said that “gas OPEC” issue had indeed been on the agenda of the meeting of countries whose combined gas reserves account for 70 percent of the world’s total. Industry and Energy Minister Viktor Khristenko who headed Russia’s delegation to the forum as was reported earlier, confirmed that no decision had been made to set up a cartel for natural gas.

Instead, the gas summit participants resolved to set up a coordination group of high-ranking officials who will, among other things, develop pricing tools for gas markets, easy-to-understand and transparent for both producers and consumers.
