U.S. Seeks to Influence Russian Elections – Russian Parliament Speaker

State Duma, the lower chamber of the Russian parliament, will consider a statement at its April 13 plenary meeting, in response to the U.S. Department of State report on elections in Russia circulated last Thursday, said Duma Speaker Boris Gryzlov.

The State Department document “in fact lays out U.S. plans to exert influence on the development of democracy in Russia and on the preparations to the upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections,” RIA Novosti news agency quoted Gryzlov as saying, adding that this report interfered with Russia’s internal affairs

“This is a policy of double standards. Other countries’ interference [with Russia’s internal affairs] is inadmissible,” said Gryzlov who is also the leader of the largest Russian political party United Russia. According to him, the U.S. Department of State announced those goals in a bid to find excuses for the enormous funds spent on various programs promoting democracy in the world.

The report of the U.S. Department of State was presented by Under Secretary of State for Global Affairs Paula Dobriansky on April 5, and submitted to Congress for consideration.
