Visa Denial Gross Abuse of Position

U.S. Department of State has in fact prevented an informal meeting between the Abkhaz envoy and UN Security Council members in the run-up to the talks on the new Georgian-Abkhaz settlement resolution, Russian Foreign Ministry’s information department said in a statement.

Washington, in turn, says this meeting will only be advisable after the UN Security Council adopts that resolution. Moscow finds this position of the U.S. State Department unclear and disturbing.

To meet after the decision is made will make no sense, Russia’s Foreign Ministry said. “The U.S. delegation can agree or refuse to participate in this meeting. But preventing it by denying entry visa [to one of the participants] is a gross abuse of position of the UN Headquarters host nation,” the statement concluded.
