U.S. Antimissile Plans Destabilize Situation in Europe

Deployment of parts of the U.S. antimissile defense system in Europe is a serious destabilizing factor, said Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov after talks with his American counterpart, as reported by Gazeta.ru.

“We believe that the strategic antimissile defense system is a serious destabilizing factor that can significantly influence regional and global security,” he said.

At a meeting with U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, Serdyukov said that there were a number of factors that brought too much tension into Moscow-Washington cooperation in the military sphere.

He pointed to the importance of cooperation between their departments, emphasizing that it had been developing dynamically in previous years.
