Washington Prepares AMD Concessions to Russia

Washington is well aware that its plans to expand the missile shield to Europe will hardly be implemented smoothly, given the firm positions of the project’s critics – Russia and the so-called Old European nations. That is why the U.S. government and Pentagon are seeking new ways of convincing the AMD initiative opponents.

The New York Times reported last week that Washington was working on a totally new scheme of cooperation with Moscow on AMD. The new scheme will involve the merger of the U.S. and Russian missile defense systems into a shared strategic network; the joint defense technologies development; and exchange of intelligence and military information.

Parts of this new scheme have obviously been presented to the Russian side today by Defense Secretary Robert Gates; the entire proposal is to be discussed at the two foreign ministers’ talks to be held within the next few weeks.
