Russia to Get Possibility to Monitor US ABM Systems in Europe

In response to Russia’s concerns over the construction of the third ABM system deployment area in Eastern Europe the United States proposed to Russia a scope of confidence-building measures. In particular, Washington will provide Moscow with a possibility to monitor the ABM systems in Poland and Czech Republic including with application of the human factor and technical means. These proposals of the American party were advised by Russian Foreign Minister Sergui Lavrov in his interview to newspaper Izvestia.

S. Lavrov believes that the interests on the USA and Russia coincide on many matters, and they should not be surrendered for the sake of occurring divergences of views.

“Evidently, they are the things that should not be surrendered for the sake of occurring divergences of views. Even such principal divergences as different stands with respect to the ABM systems, CFE Treaty, Kosovo, deployment of weapon systems in the outer space. By the way, we expect that we will succeed in reaching the agreement on certain subjects. On other subjects we may probably fail to reach an agreement, as it was on Kosovo. But regardless of all divergences, we are surely interested to enhance cooperation in the spheres where we have common approaches. It is the position of actual President Vladimir Putin. This position was confirmed at the meeting of Condoleezza Rice and Robert Gates with President-elect Dmitry Medvedev. The same position was confirmed repeatedly by President Bush.”, the Russian Minister said.
