In the weapons and drugs caches case, nine people arrested in Georgia

In connection with the caches found in Western Georgia, which contained weapons, ammunition, drugs and videos of torturing people, Georgian Interior Ministry officers detained nine people. This was announced by Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia, Irakli Garibashvili, noting that one of the suspects is an active member of the Defense Ministry, and two others are former police officers. According to the minister, among the detainees there is a man who raped people.

“It comes to the recognition of a serious crime, but it turned out that one of the persons had no previous convictions at all nor was in prison, he was simply tortured because one could not get desired evidence. The second man, who was tortured, was arrested on another charge and was in jail for possession of drugs. We believe that it was a system problem. Such was a policy and it is a problem the old authorities, the former regime,” said Garibashvili.

“I want to remind everyone that it is Vano Merabishvili that was minister then. Accordingly, it is necessary to raise a question of responsibility of all those high-ranking officials, during whose government these horrors were implemented,” said the head of the Georgian Interior Ministry.

Recall, on June 17 it became known that Georgian Interior Ministry officers in the Samegrelo region found specially camouflaged caches. They contained weapons for the conduct of large-scale armed hostilities, explosives in large quantities for conducting subversive activities, grenades, submachine guns and other firearms, communication devices, narcotic drugs and psychotropic medications – heroin, subutex, cocaine, etc.

During the search, archives with photos were also seized as well as personal information of those who were planned to be arrested after the election on October 1, 2012 in case of victory of the United National Movement on various trumped-up charges.
