Putin Set to Raise Servicemen' Pay
The Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed the government raise servicemen's pay by at least 20%, and do it before September 2005, as was planned earlier.

The Head of State made this statement today at the traditional Monday meeting with the Cabinet.

V. Putin stressed it was necessary to improve the living standards of the military, as well as home ministry personnel and students because of the current hike in tariffs and realization of the controvercial Benefits Monetization Law.

For his turn, Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov informed it was planned to shortly double the bonus on the lump sum payment due to servicemen in a number of regions.

M. Fradkov noted the relevant regulation would be considered and approved as soon as the next cabinet meeting on January 27.
