Government to Take Control of Alcohol Production

In the course of a meeting of the State Council of the Russian Federation in Kaliningrad, Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke in support of establishing a state monopoly on alcohol production.

In President's view, a government decision to monopolize alcohol production would solve the problem of illegal sale of falsified low-quality alcohol accounting for 40,000 deaths in Russia annually.

President noted that the current system of regional control of alcohol production is ineffective. "Speaking of regional excise stamps, all these stamps can be sold and bought in bundles. The system doesn't work, this is evident. It is too corrupt", said V. Putin.

President added that the government shares his point of view, and "the relevant authorities promised to move towards the solution of this problem as swiftly as they can, but stage-wise".
