Croatian fans unfurl banner saying ‘Thank you, Russia’ in downtown Moscow

Croatian football fans have unfolded a banner in downtown Moscow, which conveys a message of gratitude to Russia, a TASS journalist reported from the event.

Several dozen people gathered at Triumfalnaya Square near the monument to Vladimir Mayakovsky, where they spread out a banner decorated in the colors of the Croatian flag reading: "Thank you, Russia."

A video clip surfaced from the Croatian team’s locker room after Saturday’s Russia - Croatia quarterfinal match (2-2, 3-4 in a penalty shootout), showing Croatian defender Domagoj Vida shouting "Glory to Ukraine!" while a member of the Croatian team's delegation Ognjen Vukojevic said that he dedicates the victory to Ukraine. The footage, which was circulated overnight into Sunday, drew a mixed response.

In light of this, the Croatian Football Federation removed Vukojevic from the tournament’s delegation, and he apologized for the incident. FIFA issued a warning to Vida, who also apologized, noting that his actions had no political implication, and thanked Russia for its hospitality.

On Wednesday, Croatia will play against England in a semifinal match of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The game will be held at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium at 21:00 Moscow time (GMT +3).
