Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a telegram to Italian President Sergio Mattarella "expressing the deepest condolences over the tragic consequences of the collapse of the bridge near the city of Genoa," the Kremlin press service reported, TASS informs.
"The head of the Russian state has conveyed words of sincere sympathy and support to all families and loved ones of the victims, and wished a speedy recovery to everyone injured," the message states.
A motorway bridge, built on the A10 motorway, collapsed near Genoa early on Tuesday. According to the Italian media, there were about 20 cars on the bridge at the moment of the collapse. A rescue operation is underway.
Preliminary reports suggest there are multiple fatalities. According to available data, a nearly 100-meter-long section of the bridge collapsed on the buildings below.
