EurAsEC Leaders to Discuss Future Cooperation with WTO

Presidents of Russia, Byelorussia, Kazakhstan, Kirghizia, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan (member countries of the European-Asian Economic Community, or EurAsEC) met at Russian President Vladimir Putin's residence in Sochi last night. The informal meeting held late at night due to the unprecedented heat wave that struck the south of Russia was attended also by the Armenian president who has an observer status with the organization.

Immediately before the meeting Vladimir Putin personally greeted the participants of the summit at the entrance to his residence.

In the course of an informal dinner the presidents of the EurAsEC member countries and observers were joined by Russian premier Mikhail Fradkov and his Ukrainian colleague Viktor Yanukovich.

Wednesday EurAsEC heads of state will continue discussions at a working session. The agenda of the informal summit envisions creating a customs union, discussion of the strategy and tactics of the Community's development, cooperation in the field of fuel and energy, water and energy regulation in Central Asia, furthering the interaction between the EurAsEC and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), as well as Uzbekistan's joining the CSTO.

The EurAsEC heads of state will also discuss the problem of the interaction between the EurAsEC and the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the prospects for the EurAsEC member states joining the WTO.
