Our team scored the first goal on the 2nd minute of the game: Semin was brilliant realizing the pass of Ovechkin. However, the Canadians not only have recovered shortly but easily began to dominate. Benching of several Russian hockey players resulted in a shorthanded play for more than 10 minutes. By the 15th minute the Canadian team led 3:1 after Burns scored two goals and Kunitz scored one.
In the second period on the 22nd minute of the game Semin scored his second goal as the Canadians played shorthanded. On the 30th minute the Canadians restored their lead of two goals due to the Heatley’s powerful strike.
In the third period on the 49th minute Tereschenko inspired a hope in the Russian fans having scored the third goal. On the 55th minute Kovalchuk scored his first goal at the championship. The final game time ended 4:4.
The overtime was short. The referee made an absolutely correct but evidently uneasy decision to punish the host, the Canadian Team, for the delay in the game. The “black coat” of the Canada’s hopes became Ilia Kovalchuk, who got the puck just inside the blue-line and hammered one through traffic that beat goaltender Cam Ward.
Those who watched the joyful reaction of the Russian hockey players will remember these minutes for long. Especially the tears of Ilia Kovalchuk who failed the hide his emotions. And the Russian national team together with the fans on the stands singing the national Russian hymn.
Just after the game President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin congratulated the national team on the victory at the world championship.
Both the President and Prime Minister watched the game by TV. The state leaders emphasized the strong will of the players. In the opinion of the President, the victory became possible to a great extent due to the revival of the country.
