Russian Ministry of Defense: Russian Peacekeepers Fulfilled Order and Remained Unprovoked
The Russian Ministry of Defense is inclined to regard the fact of yesterday’s detention of four Russian peacekeepers near the Village of Ruhi, the Zugdidi District, Georgia, as a gross violation of the current agreements on the status of peacekeepers in the zone of Georgian-Abkhaz conflict and new provocation of the Georgian authorities.

Colonel Igor Konashenkov, Assistant Commander of the Russian Ground Forces, said to journalists: "About 20:30 Moscow Time the Georgian police officers in violation of all regulatory documents detained in the security zone a truck with Russian peacekeepers transporting a military cargo to the base camp of the southern security zone near the Village of Urta”.

According to Colonel Konashenkov, the Georgian police detained the cargo and four militaries including one officer.

Then Igor Konashenkov provided updated information received by the Russian side during investigation of the incident – the four Russian peacekeepers were detained by unknown persons but not by the police as it was claimed by the Georgian side earlier.

"During the investigation conducted by the Command of the Joint Peacekeeping Force in the zone of Georgian-Abkhaz conflict is was established that yesterday about 18:30 two vehicles with civil registration numbers blocked the truck of the Russian peacekeepers transporting military equipment. During 20 minutes unknown persons in civilian clothing kept the Russian peacekeepers at their machinegun point. Later policemen and Georgian TV team came to the place of incident. Thereafter the Russian militaries were brutally disarmed and delivered to a police station”, Konashenkov said.

According to him, the Russian peacekeepers strictly fulfilled the order of the Command to remain unprovoked in order to avoid escalation of the incident.

The detained peacekeepers stayed overnight in the Regional Agency of the Ministry of Interior in Zugdidi and were released on Wednesday morning after seven-hour interrogation conducted by Georgian policemen. RIA Novosti.
