Lavrov: Washington Fails Keep to Its Promise on Georgia

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said this Tuesday that earlier the American side promised to Russia that Georgia can forget about NATO membership if it uses force against South Ossetia.

"When we had repeatedly drawn the attention of our US and European partners to where the Saakashvili regime was trying to lead us all to, they in Washington once told us: “Don’t worry, if he uses force, then he can forget about NATO membership”, said the Russian Foreign Minister.

But now according to the Minister "NATO theme has now taken on an entirely different perspective“ because after the August events in the Caucasus Washington expressly supports Tbilisi in is aspirations to join NATO.

It is well-known that the USA proposed “to intensify” a dialogue with Georgia on its membership in NATO. US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on the eve of the December meeting of NATO foreign ministers claimed that the Alliance plans with respect to Georgia did not change, and all discords of NATO member states on this issue are “tactical” rather than principal.

Let us recall that 26 NATO foreign ministers at their December meeting in Brussels failed to make a decision on MAP provision to Ukraine and Georgia. In so doing instead of the MAP NATO proposed to Kiev and Tbilisi a yearlong preparatory plan.
