Russian MFA: Washington should not Intervene in the Kuril Issue
On June 21 this year, negotiations were held between Japan and the United States in Washington, where the sides have decided to “achieve a full normalization of relations between Russia and Japan, by addressing the issue of the Northern Territories”, to which the Russian Foreign Ministry reacted sharply, saying that it is a conflict between the two countries, in which Americans should not intervene.

“We consider inappropriate the situation when Russia’s sovereignty over South Kurile Islands is somehow or other put in doubt,” said the statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry.

“Any attempts to interfere do not facilitate the creation of a calm atmosphere to hold a dialogue on this difficult and sensitive topic,” stressed the Foreign Ministry of Russia.

In the statement the Russian MFA has once again reminded that the sovereignty of Russia over the Kurile Islands is absolutely legitimate. “We have the right to hope that American partners will be more respectful towards the corresponding agreements between the Allied Powers (winners of the World War II),” said the Russian MFA.

Recalling that this is not the first time the U.S. statements on the Kuril Islands dispute have displeased Moscow. In mid-February 2011, State Department Spokesman Mark Toner said that the United States urged Russia and Japan to continue dialogue on the territorial issue, but in this case Washington supports Tokyo.
