President of Kyrgyzstan: The U.S. Air Base Should Be Closed

Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev at his press conference said that the U.S. airbase at the Manas International Airport should be closed. He thinks that the airbase represents a danger to the country.

The President stressed that he has already informed the U.S. side that upon completion of the contract in 2014, the military air base should be closed. “Kyrgyzstan does not need a military airbase in the civilian airport, it is very dangerous. We want the Manas airport to become a civil airport only,” he said at his first press conference.

The U.S. air base, later renamed as the Pentagon Transit Center, was established at the Manas international airport in December 2001 and provides approximately 30% of the total air refueling for aircraft participating in the Enduring Freedom operation in Afghanistan.
