Context:

In the territory of the Southern Military District, on September 17, the Caucasus 2012 strategic exercise will start under the supervision of the chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, First Deputy Defense Minister, Gen. Nikolai Makarov.

The exercise will last a week - from 17 to 23 September in two stages. The scene of action is 4 training grounds, the Black and Caspian Seas’ water areas. It is planned that the exercise will involve about 8 thousand people, more than 200 combat vehicles, about 100 artillery pieces, some 10 combat ships and boats.

“The exercise will become for the Armed Forces the major and final stage of the complex command-staff exercises and training of military authorities in 2012, aimed at improving the quality of control of troops and testing the advanced automated systems,” the Press and Information Management of the Ministry of Defense said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is going to visit the first phase on the Rayevsky firing ground in the Krasnodar region. It is expected that the exercise, besides the president, will be also observed by Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov, Presidential envoy to the Southern Federal District Vladimir Ustinov, the Krasnodar region’s governor, Alexander Tkachev, Southern Military District Commander, A.Galkin.
