Syria's Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdisi did not commit high treason. His absence may be due to the fact that he went on vacation. “The Foreign Ministry allowed Jihad Makdisi to take leave for three months, and he left the country “on an official basis”, the newspaper Al-Watan reads.
Earlier it was reported that Makdisi was dismissed because of the statements not reflecting the government’s official position. According to the inter-Arab television channel Al Jazeera, Makdisi betrayed the regime of President Bashar al-Assad and left the country.
Makdisi had previously often appeared at press conferences on behalf of the country’s government during which he gave reporters the officials’s point of view of the conflict with the opposition force. However, in recent times he has rarely spoken to reporters, whereupon the media reported he must have gone to the opposition.
