Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych said the decision to join the Customs Union can be only made according to the results of a referendum.
"The referendum will then be required, in prospect, when it comes to joining a particular community in which we will have to delegate some of our sovereign rights under the Constitution. And here, of course, only the Ukrainian people can make such a decision," said Yanukovych.
The head of state noted that the Parliament can amend the law on referendum. In addition, he called baseless the contrasting the Customs Union and the European Union.
Meanwhile, on September 8, the Communist Party of Ukraine at the Spartak stadium in Kiev held a citizens' assembly on the initiation of a nationwide referendum, at which its main question was approved: "Do you support Ukraine's accession to the Customs Union of Belarus, Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation?" with the answer 'yes' or 'no'.
The assembly has also approved a referendum initiative group to collect the signatures of citizens of Ukraine.
