The Pentagon wants carte-blanche for secret operations abroad

The Washington Post, citing unnamed sources in the White House, writes that the Pentagon is promoting a secret plan for the US special operations forces to conduct unnotified military operations abroad.

The plan is peculiar in that for the first time since the Second World War the US "green berets" would have the right to conduct secret operations abroad without giving notice to the State Department and US Embassies in the countries where these operations are to be conducted, writes the Washington Post.

The Pentagon plan is said to have met with sharp criticism from the State Department and the CIA. In particular, Condoleezza Rice insists that the present practice whereby Pentagon has to notify the US State Department of its proposed secret operations abroad, should be left alone.
