Russia to Join NATO

but only in fighting drug trafficking

A meeting of the Russia-NATO Council (RNC) at the level of foreign ministers opened in Lithuanian capital Vilnius on Thursday. The meeting is being held in an informal mode, and without a pre-set agenda.

The ministers intend "to estimate the progress achieved in the RNC work and to discuss prospects for cooperation", says Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko.

According to A. Yakovenko, "cooperation in counteracting the Afghan drug trafficking that threatens the stability and security of the countries of the Euro-Atlantic region" may become a promising area for interaction within the framework of the RNC.

At the same time, Yakovenko remarked that Russia-NATO cooperation "may collapse due to ill-considered actions connected, for example, with invitations to individual CIS countries to join NATO".
