Status of NATO in Russia Agreed

Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Serguei Lavrov signed, in the name of Russia, an agreement defining the status of NATO forces on territory of Russia as a participant of the "Partnership for Peace" program. The document was signed after a session of the Russia-NATO Council held in Vilniues on April 21.

"It opens up new horizons for practical cooperation between Russia and NATO", said NATO Secretary General Yaap de Hoop Scheffer, commenting on the signing of the agreement. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko pointed out that a legal basis has been created for joint exercises and military transit.

The agreement has to be approved by parliament.
