OSCE Is Displeased with Latvia

In a meeting with the deputies of the Latvian seim (parliament) OSCE high commissioner for national minorities affairs Ekeus urged Latvian authorities to provide equal rights to all national minorities irrespective of the duration of their residence on the territory of the country.

The amendments the seim made to the CE Framework Convention on Defense of National Minorities recently ratified by Latvia, which excluded the Russian-speaking population of the country from the scope of action of this document, Ekeus qualified as "vague and discriminatory". Ekeus also criticized Riga's plans to reform Russian-language schools in Latvia.
