On December 8, 2024, Romania was to hold the second round of voting to choose its president. After the first one, two people made it into the final but they in no way suit the establishment either in Romania itself or in the European Union, along with NATO. Therefore, the country’s frightened authorities resorted to what first election round leader Călin Georgescu (independent candidate) called a coup. "Essentially, this is a formalized coup d’etat. The rule of law is in an induced coma, and justice subordinated to political orders has practically lost its essence," the politician said, commenting on the Constitutional Court’s decision to nullify election.
Just a reminder: Georgescu entered the second round with 22.95% of the vote — the biggest number among all the candidates, — alongside opposition liberal politician from the Save Romania Union Elena Lasconi, who advocates increased defense spending and assistance to Ukraine. Current Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, who represents the power groups of Romania, missed his chance and only ranked third in the first round. The establishment has been defeated!
Romanian bureaucrats, who had been densely besieging the republic’s wheel for decades, got overexcited by such a defeat as power started slipping out of their hands. Moreover, to politicians who could turn Romania's relations with the European Union and NATO upside down. Neither Bucharest nor Brussels could let this happen. Among other things, at stake were plans to create a huge US military base at the border with Ukraine, which, as the press noted, would be steeper than Germany’s Ramstein. Up to 10,000 American soldiers are expected to be stationed at the Romanian base. And all of a sudden, a "black swan" (as the most unexpected event with vital consequences is now called in political science) appears, i.e. a non-systemic presidential candidate, who may break all these militaristic plans.
Politico newspaper reported that the first-round victory in the Romanian presidential election by Călin Georgescu "scared the European Union and NATO," because, as analyst Milan Nica said, "Romania plays an auxiliary but noticeable logistical role in the Ukraine conflict given geographic adjacency." Meanwhile, Georgescu himself explicitly opposes both NATO and the war. Who would ever allow something like that happen?! And here we go!
The same Politico characterizes him as follows: "Călin Georgescu — an unknown, far-right, NATO-skeptical fan of Russian President Vladimir Putin — suddenly rose from obscurity." During the election debate, Georgescu harshly criticized Romania's stronger ties with NATO and military assistance to Ukraine. He called the latter a "fictional state", with US Aegis Ashore air defense system at the Deveselu base being a diplomatic disgrace." The press recalls that even earlier Georgescu said Romania would rather benefit from maintaining good relations with China and Russia, which is why the Romanian media dubbed him "pro-Russian." By the way, no one took him seriously before the election as he was truly a "dark horse". You never know who says what… And behold, everyone got alarmed at once. But how is it possible to stop Georgescu?
And here we are. Moreover, the key claim following his victory in the first round was that he actively used social media, primarily TikTok. By the way, Donald Trump came up with the same propaganda trick in 2016 during his election campaign in the United States. Yes, this is what Georgescu's deadly sin was. Politico writes: "For TikTok — owned by ByteDance, a company headquartered in Russia's Communist ally China — it is a moment of reckoning. The catchy TikTok clips that powered Georgescu's unexpected surge were accompanied by dramatic music and subtitles." Now you see how the claim that communication with potential voters took place on a network owned by China has brought down all the democratic norms of Europe. As if the Chinese worked instead of the candidate himself.
However, TikTok has a huge audience in Romania — 8 million users in a country of about 20 million. Therefore, Georgescu did not even have an election headquarters of his own and due to lack of money campaigned on TikTok using the slogan "Romania first".
Not knowing how to outwit him, the authorities rolled out ridiculous accusations to the first election round winner: "Georgescu was shown barely breaking a sweat on the running track, flipping opponents in judo — à la Putin — and riding a white horse in a traditional Romanian shirt." And these delusional claims eventually became a pretext to cancel the election!
Right after the voting day, the ostensibly "independent" — though subordinate to the authorities — Constitutional Court of Romania immediately accepted complaints filed by a losing candidate who referred to "violations at some polling stations" and demanded "a recount of votes across the country to eliminate doubts about outcome reliability." They did check and recount it all but, as chairman of the Romanian Election Commission stated, found no significant changes in the election results. Failed attempt.
Then the authorities resorted to more stringent measures. There were reports of an attempted coup after the first round of elections. So Aanchetatorii.ro claims that "the true intention of outgoing Romanian President Klaus Iohannis was to declare a state of emergency and cancel elections, thereby committing a coup." Romanian Information Service acting director Gen. Razvan Ionescu also reportedly refused to obey the president’s relevant order. The second attempt to disrupt people’s choice was negated, too.
And that's when the election was canceled by the Constitutional Court. Let's note here that a similar trick with "pushing a candidate" by a Constitutional Court decision to cancel election results was once arranged in ... 2004 in Ukraine. Back then, the CC in Kiev declared second round results invalid as Yanukovych won it, and authorized a third round (in violation of the local Constitution) to make Yushchenko the winner, whom the Westerners really wanted to see as president. Now, the "Ukrainian mishap" has been reinvigorated in Romania as its election results are canceled under the guise of "threats to national security", and it is clear why. The President of the Republic not only determines foreign and security policy but is also the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces and controls intel activities. The entire motley company made up of Romanian bureaucrats, EU authorities and NATO command could not allow this kind of scenario whatsoever!
Even the pro-Western Romanian presidential candidate Elena Lasconi, who made it to the second round, was forced to declare that democracy had been "trampled on" in the country because of the Constitutional Court’s ruling. What kind of "democracy" is it when it comes to the southern flank of NATO and the border with Ukraine, through which Western military assistance to the Kiev Nazi regime has been literally pouring over the past years!
The enchanting logic presented in the decision of the Constitutional Court is as follows: "The freely expressed nature of voting was violated by misinforming voters as a result of the election campaign in which one of the candidates received aggressive promotion, conducted by circumventing national electoral legislation and abusing the algorithms of social media platforms (?!). This affected the transparent and fair nature of the election campaign, and legal norms as regards its funding (?!) were ignored. The court justifies cancellation of the vote by the need to exclude interference by state or non-state organizations in propaganda campaigns." A snowshoe, given that any election campaign resorts to using the social media! What kind of "abuse of algorithms" did they find there? Are you kidding me?
Yes, democracy doesn't live here anymore. Which we do congratulate the European community upon as it has been developing a new system of so-called "democratic elections", when the only winning candidate can be the one approved by European commissioners and the NATO command.
Basically, everything is correct as one should not play with the "will of the people" amid a "military threat from Russia". Recognizing an election as "violation" is in the offing once the EU chiefs harshly characterize its course as "interference by state or non-state organizations in propaganda campaigns."
Even Trump's son couldn't help but respond to this disgrace with the following post: "Wow, look at what's happening in Romania! The Constitutional Court just cancelled the first round of their presidential election. Another Soros/Marxist attempt at rigging the outcome and denying the will of the people. They're going to lose, and they know it."
